In my last entry, I discussed my two favorite road-rides around Tahoe (the Triangle), so in keeping with the theme, this time I write about mountain biking.
The Truckee and Tahoe areas are a “heaven on earth” for mountain bikers. There are climbs and rollers for the cross-country riders. There are strict downhill bombers at Northstar for those riders who don’t like to pedal. The ridge line from Brockway Summit northwards to Truckee (including Mt Watson, the Fiberboard Freeway, and the Sawtooth Ridge) is deeply veined with fire roads, single tracks, and even some pavement – all to the benefit of the mountain biking locals.
Trina loves to ride her mountain bike. She’s keen for the climbs, careful on the descents, and really loves cross-country rollers through meadows of mule’s ears and lupin. She and her friends make a point of riding together at least twice a week and luckily, boyfriends & husbands can join on one of those days.
Riding with women is great. The need to “keep up” or to constantly compare one’s bike or gear against other riders is happily missing. Where riding with a bunch of guys is great, riding with women is a very different dynamic and a great change of pace. I’m grateful to have the chance to ride with Trina and her friends, even if it is only once in a while.
They like to ride the network of trails accessed from the Tahoe Nordic Center in the Highlands of Tahoe City. Whether riding around Anton Meadows, or adjacent the local reservoir or single tracking up to Mt Watson, the variety of trails and difficulty gives riders of all ability levels something to enjoy.
Come on out and enjoy all that the area has to offer and if you’re up for a ride, send us an email – we’re happy to suggest some of our favorites.
